Windlass
New windlass on the foredeck
Bow · 10 steps
Step by step
There was no windlass before, just an anchor I had to raise by hand.
What went in
- Windlass
- Maxwell RC10-8
The steps
Step 01 · Foredeck
Before: no windlass
Step 02 · Foredeck
Deck opened up
Step 03 · Foredeck
Holes cut
Step 04 · Foredeck
Cut-out, filler on hand
Step 05 · Foredeck
Custom composite riser
I made a custom composite riser so the chain and rode sit high enough to clear the ledge along the boat’s exterior. I traced the windlass outline and added 1″ all the way round.
In the model
Lifts the windlass so the chain and rode clear the ledge along the boat's exterior. Windlass outline plus 1" all round.
Step 06 · Below deck
Below deck
In the model
Below deck: the gearbox hangs under the gypsy and the motor lies horizontal off its side.
Step 07 · Below deck
Switch in the old chain hole
I reused the original anchor-chain hole as an access port. The Maxwell up/down switch sits just inside it.
In the model
Maxwell up/down switch, mounted just inside the original anchor-chain hole, which I reused as an access port beside the windlass.
Step 08 · Below deck
Switch, control unit and breaker
The control unit sits in the forward cabinet.
In the model
Maxwell up/down switch, mounted just inside the original anchor-chain hole, which I reused as an access port beside the windlass.
A reversing contactor (solenoid pack) in the cabinet just forward of the breaker. The deck switch triggers it, and it switches the heavy motor current one way for up and the other for down.
135 A breaker for the windlass, on the port side of the forward cabin.
